5th-8th Math
April 7, 2006
Wow another month has passed! It is finally SPRING and we are definitely on the way to the close of another school year.
5th grade just started on Chapter 7 and boy is it a long one. They started the other day learning about prime and composite numbers which in turn helps them learn how to find the Greatest Common Factor and the Least Common Multiple. Next they will learn how to find equivalent fractions, simplest form, compare and order fractions, and finally how to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers. So just because the end is near, it doesn’t mean we don’t have a lot to cover.
6th grade is learning how integers can be positive and negative. They are learning how to add, subtract, multiply and divide them. After they have found out that there are these negative and positive integers, I will introduce to them rational numbers and their properties. These properties include the associative, commutative, and distributive properties.
In 7th grade, I am going back over part of Chapter 7 and I will have them retake a test over it next week. In Chapter 8 students will learn how to set up and solve a proportion, solve percent equations and they will also be introduced to counting principles and probability simulations.
8th grade is just about to finish Chapter 7. I am hoping we can have our test next week before they go on break and forget everything from the chapter. They will be happy to know that we are leaving linear systems for awhile and moving onto exponents and exponential functions. This involves simplifying expressions with exponents, using scientific notation and graphing exponential functions.
NOTE: I want to remind everyone that even though they do not have a study guide for a math test, they do however have their notes and book to review for it. I do expect everyone to study and review for a test just as they would do for other classes.
I hope everyone has a blessed and wonderful Easter!
