March Newsletter

Main Objectives:

Word and PowerPoint

We have learned to make tables using Microsoft Word.  If you have a computer at home, you may challenge them by asking them to make a table of family names, phone numbers, and/or addresses or any other table.  It is so important to use these skills as they gain them.  Practicing outside of class time would be very beneficial.

The 7th and 8th grade are beginning to make PowerPoint Presentations.  The first PowerPoint Presentation is about their favorite President.  They will have the choice to save this 3-5 min. presentation on a CD that is provided to them.  They can then take it home with them, if they wish to work on it outside of class time.  They will also get to keep this CD at the end of the school year.

Learning to type without peaking at the keys will be our focus in the coming months.  At this point, their speed is not nearly as important as their accuracy when typing.  I will challenge them by covering the keyboards, at times, so they will not be able to see the keys, but will still be able to type.  As encouragement, I will set individual goals and small rewards for achieving accuracy goals.

Nothing will replace good old fashioned practice, so we are encouraging the students to use these skills outside of class (at home).  This will help them retain what they have learned.

We will continue with PowerPoint and Word for the next few weeks as well as some keyboarding/typing challenges.

We have learned several keyboard shortcuts and screen elements. The students scored very high (mostly 100%) on the quiz for these topics and were rewarded for their effort.

We now need to practice learning to use the following keyboard shortcuts more often:

·         Control (CTRL) and the X key for Cut

·         Control (CTRL) and the C key for Copy

·         Control (CTRL) and the V key for Paste

·         Control (CTRL) and the P key for Print

·         Control (CTRL) and the S key for Save

·         Control (CTRL) and the Z key for Undo

·         Control (CTRL) and the Y key for Redo

Keyboarding shortcuts are also listed on the Menu drop downs, if you’d like to see more of them.  We will continue to learn more keyboarding tips.
